About

I’m Nick Mararac [mɛrʌræk]. I’m currently a Ph.D. student in sociolinguistics at Georgetown University.

Prior to arriving at Georgetown, I was a Naval Officer in the U.S. Navy. I received my commission from the United States Naval Academy in 2007. During my career in the navy, I was a Surface Warfare Officer and served out of Japan, South Korea, and San Diego.

As a student of sociolinguistics, I want to merge my experiences from the navy with my current academic pursuits. I’m interested in applying sociolinguistics and discourse analysis frameworks to elucidate the process of communication in “doing leadership” within institutions, such as the military.

As my interests are motivated in expanding the current scholarship on military discourse in academia, I also want my research used to understand how to better cultivate diversity represented in a community in order to help combat discriminatory policies such as Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. I believe a community, such as a workplace, strives when individuals can rely on their various identities as resources for their leadership and professional practices.
